Mycology Mailer
January 2002
Dear XXXXXXXXX:

The 41st annual ICAAC meeting in Chicago was blessed with good weather and was generally well attended. Attendance did seem down from previous years--we're told that there were about 9,000 scientific attendees. But, given the circumstances surrounding this year's conference one can conclude that, all-in-all, the show was a success.

We would like to thank all of you who stopped by the doctorfungus booth (you know who you are), and were delighted to hear your words of praise and suggestions for improvement. Especially rewarding was your willingness to lend a hand and become part of the online community doctorfungus seeks to nurture.

We are particularly eager to expand our visual offerings of clinical images, slides, and videos. These are extremely popular and helpful to all of us. >>Contribute images now<<

Happy 2002!

Mycology in the News
In other news, licensure of Pfizer's voriconazole by the FDA appears imminent. If you missed it, Raoul Herbrecht presented key new data at ICAAC 2001 as abstract J-680. In this landmark comparison of voriconazole with conventional amphotericin B as therapy for aspergillosis, voriconazole demonstrated superior efficacy, superior safety, and reduced mortality.

With this new dataset, the range of options for therapy for aspergillosis now includes the amphotericin B preparations, itraconazole, voriconazole, and caspofungin. That's three classes of agents, all with strong activity and, in some cases, good potential for use in combination.

Pretty exciting!
