Help with fungal nomenclature and taxonomy
This genus is a basidiomycetous mould.
Species in this genus
Fugomyces cyanescens
Notes:
The fungus has been long treated as
Sporothrix cyanescens
, but the genus
Sporothrix
is restricted to species that are ascomycetes and
Fugomyces cyanescens
is a basidiomycete. In 1987, this fungus was transferred as
Cerinosterus cyanescens
to a new genus established for
Cerinosterus luteoalba
(Moore RT. Micromorphology of yeasts and yeast-like fungi and its taxonomic implications. Stud. Mycol. 30:203-206, 1987). Later, phylogenic analysis and other characters indicated that
C. cyanescens
was substantially different from the type species for the genus
Cerinosterus
. Taxonomic and phylogenic analysis at that time indicated that there was no genus available for the species, that is, a new genus would need to be created. To resolve this problem, Sigler established the new genus
Fugomyces
and renamed the fungus
Fugomyces cyanescens
(Sigler L & Verweij PE.
Aspergillus
,
Fusarium
, and other opportunistic moniliaceous fungi
in
Murray PR et al.(eds).
Manual of Clinical Microbiology
, vol. 2, pp.1726-1760, ASM Press, Washington, DC, 2003). This proposal neatly resolves the confusion as to what the fungus should be called.
Cerinosterus
cyanescens
is a synonym of this species.
Sporothrix
cyanescens
is an obsolete synonym of this species.
